Leading Procurement into the Future – Big Ideas Summit 2017

2017 is a pivotal year for the procurement profession. The Big Ideas Summit 2017 will help lay the ground work for the changes ahead.

We firmly believe that 2017 will be the year that everything changes for procurement. No longer a transactional function, procurement is driving value for organisations across the world. But the journey doesn’t stop there.

As the pace of change increase even further, procurement needs to adapt and evolve in order to maintain its position. Technology will play a major role in this evolution across the profession, and throughout the supply chain.

To help procurement find its feet in Industry 4.0, and to help lead it into the future, Procurious is once again gathering the brightest minds in the profession for the Big Ideas Summit 2017. This year, we’re doing a spot of globe trotting as we host events in Singapore, Sydney, Chicago and Dubai but we’re kicking things of in London!

If you’re new to Procurious, or missed our previous events, let us set the scene for you. The first event of 2017 will take place in London on Thursday the 23rd of February. The event will bring together 40-50 established thought leaders, senior decision makers and industry experts, to discuss procurement’s future.

This is a unique opportunity for delegates, and the wider community, to gain insight into the trends shaping our profession. Once again, we’ll be inviting the community to get involved as digital delegates, and to help drive the conversations online.

By getting current and future procurement leaders discussing key trends, risks and issues, it will help prepare us all for the journey ahead. These leaders will then have tangible outcomes they can take back to their organisations to drive innovation and change.

Be Brave or Be Dead

Procurious has once again secured a fantastic list of keynote speakers and expert panellists. Kicking off Big Ideas 2017 will be respected futurist, entrepreneur, and author, Mark Stevenson.

Setting the scene and providing a context for the day ahead, Mark will draw on his own experience to discuss the key components procurement need to be aware of. These are: geo-politics; geo-economics; and geo-technology.

Stevenson will also outline the technology ‘waves’ coming in the next decade, and argue that companies that can take advantage of these waves will not only attract the best staff, they will seriously outperform all their rivals.

How to submit your Big Idea

It doesn’t matter whether you film your Big Idea on your phone, tablet, laptop or PC- we’re not picky! But, to help you out, we’ve put together a list of some of our recommended methods for reaching out to us. Once you’ve completed your film, you can reach us by email ([email protected]) or on Twitter (@procurious_).

Alternatively, if you have always dreamed of being an Internet star, YouTube might be the tool for you.

  • Head over to https://www.youtube.com/uploadand either select a readymade video to upload, or hit ‘Webcam capture’ to film your piece on the spot.
  • Select ‘Start recording’ to get the camera rolling (remembering to tick ‘Allow’ should you be prompted by YouTube’s Privacy Settings)
  • When done press ‘Stop recording’ followed by ‘Continue’.

Don’t be daunted by filling-out the ‘Basic info’ – all that’s required is a title, short description, and some tags. For your title we’d suggest using something along the lines of: My Big Idea is… [insert here]

In order to make your video easy to find, we’d recommend using the #BigIdeas2017 and Procurious tags – but feel free to add more!

Learning the Fine Art of Creativity

We live in an ideas economy where creativity is the new currency. So is it possible for those with less artistic flair to learn how to get their creative juices flowing?

Everyone’s A Little Bit Creative 

Many of us enjoyed a childhood spent imagining, innovating and creating whether we were painting pictures, constructing dens from cardboard boxes or inventing fantastical make-believe games.

Indeed, the vast majority of research into child psychology suggests that we are all born naturally creative but we subsequently endure an education system or working environment in which our imaginations are more or less stamped out of us.

James Bannerman, a creative change agent and author of Non-Fiction best-seller Genius: Deceptively Simple Ways to Become Instantly Smarter, firmly believes that everyone has the capacity to be creative and innovative. Of course, some adults demonstrate greater potential than others but by employing certain techniques and embracing our inner creativity, we can all achieve additional moments of pure genius.

In a world where innovation is the new currency, procurement teams that fail to execute their ideas with originality will fall behind and die. James will be on hand at the Big Ideas Summit 2017 in London to give our CPOs and online delegates tips to release the creative genius in their teams.

Innovate Or Die

The maxim that organisations must innovate or die has never been more true thanks to rapid technology developments and fierce competition. In procurement, CPOs need to foster their intrapreneurs and work to achieve what Bannerman calls a ‘return on inspiration’:

“ It is easy to become fixated by Return On Investment in business, and often with good reason. The problem with traditional ROI, however, is that it is built upon ‘known returns’.

Creative Thinking, however, is more closely connected with ‘surprise returns’. You don’t always know what you’re going to get at the end of it – because creativity involves ‘the defeat of habit by originality’ (as Arthur Koestler once said in his 1964 classic The Art of Creation.

Yet, to those with an open mind, it can still be worth exploring the world of “return on inspiration”, as the ad agency Golley Slater referred  to it,  to see what comes out the other side”

At the Big Ideas Summit 2017, Bannerman will be putting 50 CPOs through their paces as he introduces them to lateral thinking exercises.

“ During our interactive session we will look at the C.A.N.D.O. model – which I write about in Genius!  This pinpoints the 5 main ways to come up with new ideas, whatever the challenge and whatever the problem: New Connections, New Alterations, New Navigations, New Directions and New Oppositions.

Before we explain what they are, and how they can be used in the real world of work, however, we’ll start off with a few Lateral Thinking exercises.

Take the question ‘What do you lose everytime you stand up ?’ for example. Many people struggle with this question, because they approach it far too rigidly and logically.”Maybe you lose your balance?” or “Maybe you lose the comfort of your chair” etc… If you apply a little Lateral Thinking and spin the question around, however, it can start to become much easier. ‘What do you gain everytime you sit down’ ? You gain a lap!

What’s It All About? The Big Ideas Summit 2017 FAQs

Last week, we announced that the Big Ideas Summit 2017 is going global with events in London, Sydney, Chicago, Dubai and Singapore. If you’re interested in getting involved but still not entirely sure what’s going on, look no further! We’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions to get you fully up to speed!

What is it?

The Big Ideas Summit is a unique online event uniting procurement and supply chain professionals from around the globe to drive innovation and inspire change.   

When is it?

We kick off the global tour in London on 23 February 2017. But a lively conversation has already begun on Procurious! Expect to see most of the action between 09.00 – 17.00 (GMT) as we share video insights, quotes, photos and summary articles direct from London.

If you can’t join the action live, not to worry.  The thought-provoking discussions and debate will continue long after, and we’ll be sharing video footage of all our Influencers Big Ideas throughout February and March on Procurious. 

Where is it?

First stop, London! Although our Top Influencers will be meeting in Soho, due to its digital nature Procurious members across the world can get involved from the comfort of their office, armchair or even from the beach!

Procurious members can also use our iOS App to follow the action. It’s available in the Apple iTunes store and is free to download. 

How can I join in?

You’ll need to be a registered member of Procurious – join here for free if you haven’t already. Whether you chose to follow the Big Ideas Summit 2016 on Procurious, or via one of our other social media channels, we hope you got just as much out of the day as we did in London.

The Big Ideas Summit was positioned as a digitally-led event, enabling us to include the global procurement and supply chain community in the day, even although we couldn’t have everyone in London (as much as we wish we could!).

The team at Procurious HQ would just like to say a quick thanks to everyone who took part in the Big Ideas Summit 2016, both in London, and around the world. We were blown away by the conversation, discussion and interaction last week’s Summit, and are looking forward to sharing even more with you in the coming weeks.

Where were you last Thursday? Did you join in with the discussions and conversation online? While we prepare all our influencers’ videos and content to share soon, we’ve pulled out some of the key moments and are recapping Big Ideas 2016 just for you.

We got started early, setting the scene and introducing our early arrivals to our digital delegates and social media audience.

To provide the context for all our conversations over the course of the day, Barry Ward, Senior Procurement Brand Manager at IBM, spoke about external change, market disruptions and the three key calls to action that CPOs must take notice of.

Nik Gowing then scared the life out of us talking about the cataclysmic potential of Unthinkable Events.

Having talked about the findings of his excellent ‘Thinking the Unthinkable‘ study, our delegates were invited to think about their unthinkables, and share them with the rest of the room.

As everyone settled back down again after our morning interlude, Paul Markillie opened our eyes to the potential of the disruptive mega-trends that will change the way supply chains are designed and operated.

Paul talked about new materials being used in the manufacturing process, how BMW are leading the way in this field with their manufacturing process for the i3 model, and how 3D Printing is finally coming of age.

The audience were then treated to an insight of a revolution currently taking social media by storm. Elizabeth Linder used her wealth of experience to build on the concept of the Conversational Century.

Needless to say, it got people thinking, and more than a couple of senior procurement leaders in the room considering how their teams could be leveraging social media more effectively.

Probably the keynote with the most profound human and empathetic impact of the day came from Lucy Siegle. Lucy pricked our social consciences while discussing the impact that supply chains, particularly those in the fashion industry, were having on a global population.

From consumer behaviour, to the forgotten people in supply chains, Lucy got us all considering what we individually and collectively could do to make a real difference in the world.

Sustainability Panel

Lucy was joined on stage by Peter Holbrook, CEO at Social Enterprise UK, and Timo Worrall, of J&J, to discuss social and sustainable procurement.

It was a fascinating discussion and generated some great takeaways for our procurement leaders. Take a look here at some of the topics our experts discussed.

Gabe P - BIS Keynote

Fancy yourself as a Chief Spend Officer? If Gabe Perez and Coupa have their way, then procurement’s remit could expand to include all organisational spend. Here are a few top insights from his session.

Online collaboration is something all the members of our next panel know about in great detail. Martin Chilcott, founder of 2degrees, Chris Hancock, founder of Source2Fund, and our very own Procurious GM, Lisa Malone, discussed the power of online collaboration in procurement.

Next up, procurement heavyweight and ISM CEO, Tom Derry. Tom talked about how ISM are helping procurement professionals equip themselves for the future by ensuring that they have the right skills. The ISM Mastery Model has already helped train over 60,000 procurement professionals, and it certainly felt like there were a few more converts in the audience!

Tom was then joined by two heavy hitters in the UK CPO recruitment space in Lucy Harding and Lee Gudgeon to discuss what skills procurement leaders need to succeed in the future.

Lucy urged the delegates to help “challenge the notion that procurement is a career cul-de-sac“, and showcasing all the best aspects of working in procurement.

Big Data, predictive analytics and forecasting will enable procurement to be more agile in a volatile environment. This was the view of Chris Sawchuk, the Hackett Group, during the final keynote of the day.

Finally, we asked some senior procurement leaders to tell us what they thought procurement’s blind spots were, and how they should be dealing with them.

There were some great, tough questions from the audience, and from our social media audience, producing some great insights for our delegates to take away.

Indeed, Being courageous is now the defining characteristic of successful procurement leaders, according to the influencers who spoke during Procurious’ second annual Big Ideas Summit on April 21, 2016.

The unprecedented digital think-tank event connected these presenters with Procurious’ 14,000+ members, crowdsourcing everyone’s big ideas for the future of the profession.

Sponsored by Coupa, The Hackett Group, IBM, and the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®), the event sparked vigorous discussion on Procurious.com, the leading online community for procurement/supply management professionals.

Preparing for “Black Swans”

In a year racked by political and economic volatility, Former BBC anchor Nik Gowing challenged delegates to prepare for the next “black swans” (unknown cataclysmic events) that threaten their supply chains.

Barry Ward, Senior Brand Manager, IBM, urged them to use Cognitive Procurement technologies to predict these crises, which could throw their market caps into a downward spiral.

Uber-ization Sparks Innovation

Gabe Perez, Vice President of Strategy and Development, Coupa Software, encouraged procurement leaders to drive more innovation and value by replacing RFP processes with an Uber-like open network model.

How else can procurement leaders accelerate innovation? Christopher Sawchuk, Principal and Global Advisory Practice Leader, The Hackett Group, laid out an agility model enabled by the right culture, talent and leadership, risk forecasting and planning, automation, outsourcing, and more.

Driving Social Outcomes

Procurement leaders’ opportunity to do social good was another hot topic. Journalist Lucy Siegle, co-founder of The Green Carpet Challenge, called attention to abuses in the fashion industry supply chain, and the iconic brands who are tackling it.

Peter Holbrook, CEO of Social Enterprise UK, discussed the transformational ‘Buy Social Corporate Challenge‘, through which ten major global organisations will spend £1 billion with social enterprises by 2020.

Open and Connected

With the pervasive use of the Internet and social media, especially among the Millennial generation, leaders such as Tom Derry, CEO of ISM®, advocated a more open communications approach. Walking the talk, his organisation recently made its comprehensive Mastery Model – a blueprint for lifetime success in supply management – freely accessible over the Internet.

“The procurement profession must share, share, and share online to build our collective muscle, amplify attention to our impact, and tackle our thorniest issues together,” said Tania Seary, founder of Procurious.

More supply chain leaders are making the move to CEO

  • Supply chain leaders who have stepped up to CEO include Tim Cook of Apple, Mary Barra of General Motors and Brian Krzanich of Intel.
  • Kevin O’Marah comments that supply chain leaders have CEO-level skills including balancing risk and opportunity, fighting the near-term battle with an eye on long term strategy, and focusing on profitable growth.
  • CPOs think like engineers, but also like salespeople. Like CEOs, they’re able to communicate and influence to get the job done.

CIPS UK: Procurement salaries are on the rise

  • Demand for procurement professionals has risen over the past 12 months driving salaries up 5 per cent, compared to the UK national average rise of 2.9 per cent.
  • 68 per cent of those surveyed had received a pay increase in the past year, compared to 61 per cent in 2015,
  • This has driven the average salary for procurement professionals up from £41,661 last year, to £44,226 in the past 12 months.

India: Punjabi procurement agencies in wheat corruption scandal

  • Punjab’s foodgrain procurement agency officials accused of siphoning off over Rs 12,000 crore and diverting procured wheat to the black market.
  • Officials accused of covering up theft by adding water to stored wheat to increase its weight.
  • Farmers caught in the cross-fire as banks freeze payments.
  • Over 500 mandis (procurement centres) to be monitored by committee.

US Defence: Proposal to cut war budget to fund procurement

  • Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Mac Thornberry, wants to allocate an additional $18 billion to buy newequipment and maintain aging gear and facilities.
  • The draft bill would preserve the overall budget top-line of $610 billion, but bulk up base budget spending to $574 billion.
  • $18 billion would be pulled from overseas contingency operations funds.
  • Thornberry said he believed “procurement was the real way out of the readiness pit”.

It feels like revisiting an old friend – familiar faces in the room, influencers and keynote speakers, a fabulous location at the Soho Hotel, and a buzz of excitement for things to come.

Yes, that’s right, the Big Ideas Summit – the world’s largest procurement online think tank event, is back and after weeks of planning, discussions and anticipation, we’re less than half an hour from our first keynote of the day.

With a nutrition-free breakfast now packed away (or do danishes and coffee count as ‘clean eating’?), Procurious’ Founder, Tania Seary, is welcoming our delegates, setting the ground rules and pointing our delegates towards the Procurious iOS App so they can engage with you – like, right now!

Setting out our Stall

As with the Big Ideas Summit 2015, there are just 50 Top Influencers here at The Soho Hotel. However, the unique nature of this online event means that all 13,500+ Procurious members are invited to shape the agenda, steer the conversations and share their own Big Ideas.

Conversations among Digital Delegates have already been lively with procurement pros the world over submitting questions for our Influencers via Twitter and sharing their own Big Ideas 60 second video challenges on Procurious.

Here in London, we’ll be tackling the thorniest issues for procurement, from the true cost of retail fashion supply chains, to procurement’s blind spots, and why traditional models of leadership are failing us.

We have an amazing speaker and influencer line-up for 2016, with thought leaders, senior executives and experts from world-renowned organisations.

I had the chance to catch up briefly with IBM’s Mike Murphy O’Reilly – one of the first movers on Procurious nearly two years ago – and no prizes for guessing he’s most excited to hear from Elizabeth Linder, Facebook’s Government Communication specialist.

“Like Social Media, Procurement, continues to evolve and the importance of collaborative sharing  events like Big Ideas allows us to harness the collective knowledge and information to further their careers and the function,” Mike told me over coffee before revealing his own Big Idea will be on The Information of Everything!

Japanese Earthquake Supply Chain Disruption

  • Two earthquakes in Japan at the end of last week, tragically killing 41 people, are set to cause major disruptions to Japanese and global supply chains.
  • Toyota are one of a number of manufacturers who will be suspending production at facilities in southern Japan due to a shortage of parts or factory damage
  • Organisations in Japan have been making changes to their supply chains to mitigate risks from natural disasters following the earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
  • It is thought that the current disruptions will test these changes, and new measures put in place to help mitigate these risks.

Cybersecurity Worker Shortage

  • According to a recent survey, nearly two-thirds of Millennials were unaware they could pursue a career in cybersecurity.
  • This has raised concerns that there could be a shortage of cybersecurity workers in the coming years.
  • The survey, commissioned by Raytheon and the National Cyber Security Alliance, also showed that 58 per cent of the Millennials surveyed were not taught about ways to stay safe online.
  • Universities and colleges are now working to introduce programmes which integrate cybersecurity into existing computing and computer science courses.

H&M Releases 2015 Sustainability Report

  • H&M published its Conscious Actions Sustainability Report 2015 late last week, highlighting the actions the retailer has taken during the 12 month period on supply chain sustainability
  • The report shows a steady increase of sustainably sourced materials, and progress when it comes to the use of renewable electricity.
  • H&M now sources 20 per cent of its materials sustainably, as well as using 78 per cent renewable energy sources for its global electricity usage (up from 27 per cent in 2014).
  • The report also highlighted the signing of the Global Framework Agreement with IndustriALL Global Union and IF Metall, aimed at working towards payment of fair living wages

Power Profiles 1 - Justin PlokhooyTalent Management – It is clear, and has been for a couple of years, that supply is outstripping demand when it comes to the Procurement job market.  In 2016, firms will be challenged to do a better job in working with their current employees to better develop career plans (up to and including a path to the C-suite), and find challenging work to keep them from looking elsewhere. 

A work environment that has the right pay and benefits is always important, but even more important is the opportunity to have a more flexible work arrangement. Millennials have hung like a Sword of Damocles over the entire job market, and with that generation entering the workforce, firms must offer more mobility tools in how they execute work.

Procurement as a Service – Procurement organisations are struggling to get the right to execute on the work they have. The use of outsourcing and ProS has exploded over recent years and will continue to grow in 2016. 

Procurement organisations will continue to ask their employees to conduct more value added work and as a result the administrative functions will need a place to live. Moving those to a service provider will become a growing trend. This will also allow firms to become much more scalable and flexible in response to changing market conditions, quickly finding skills that may have taken much longer through a permanent hire. 

Driving out labor costs should not be the deciding reason to move to a ProS model, but that may end of being a benefit as well.  The “as-a-service” economy is here to stay and Procurement leaders should embrace the possibilities.

Power Profiles 1 - Anna SpadyMore millennials = more mobile – Now that Millennials have outranked Boomers as the dominant workforce, we believe there are big waves in store for procurement.

We’re convinced this next generation of CPOs will demand mobile and agile everything, and simply won’t be content with the clunky processes we’ve had to use to compare, select, and communicate with our suppliers.

Even our clients in the most traditional of industries (government, healthcare, finance) are feeling this necessity. They’re creating iPhone apps to administer benefits packages, and using Twitter as a consulting platform. Similarly, Procurement will also be forced to pivot, because ultimately more millennials means a need to be more mobile.

Innovative evaluation – One big trend we anticipate in North America is a more innovative way to evaluate procurement technology. 

As a Marketer, I know that paid analysts and reviews are simply not as trusted as organic reviews from real customers. So it was interesting to read this Procurious discussion on the pros & cons of using review sources like Gartner. 

We’re convinced technology assessment methods like the Magic Quadrant will become increasingly obsolete. Because there are two big problems with these pay-to-play systems. 

First, they’re too niche, and the evaluations are exclusive to platforms that cover every area of procurement, excluding platforms who specialise in part of the procurement process. Their outdated criteria also makes makes outdated technology look like winners, and the factors aren’t up-to-date with what is actually on the market.

The second problem is their hefty price tag, which often excludes valuable options like newer, smaller companies, who might actually offer the best functionality. We believe the future holds more relevant and dynamic ways to find e-procurement solutions. 

Leveraging Technology for Vendor Selection – We’ve noticed nearly all the technology and tools on the Procurement market today focus on vendor maintenance (invoicing, contract management), while neglecting the critical process of selecting those vendors. 

Why have parts of the procurement process evolved (paper catalogs streamlined to the web, entire supply chains being monitored from a single console, etc), yet the actual selection and comparison process remains in something akin to the technology dark ages?

Our big idea is to see the rest of procurement catch up. To see the age of IOT and data applied to each part of the procurement process, starting with more sophisticated  vendor selection methods.
